Dry Needling

Dry Needling, what is that?

Dry needling is a technique Chiropractor’s use for the treatment of pain and movement impairments. The technique uses a “dry” needle, one without medication or injection, inserted through the skin into areas of the muscle. I know most people don’t like the idea of needles, but to be quite honest, most patients say they don’t feel majority of the sticks with the needles being so tiny. Dry needling is not acupuncture, which is a practice based on traditional Chinese medicine and performed by acupuncturists, but our philosophy is more medical-based within having to be a practitioner to perform this procedure. Dry needling is a part of modern Western medicine.

Why should you choose Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a form of treatment used in many different chiropractic offices today. Chiropractors use dry needling with the goal of releasing or inactivating trigger points to relieve pain or improve range of motion. The cool thing about it is how it is working on a cellular level which coincides with the chiropractic adjustments and therapy. A tiny therapeutic micro lesion is created with the needlestick, this then causes our body to start a natural healing process in that area which starts repairing tissue, desensitizes the nerves involved, decreases inflammation, and reduces pain. The needle may cause a small focal lesion which triggers satellite cell migration to the area which repair or replace damaged myofibers. This occurs 7-10 days after dry needling. It is unclear whether continued dry needling within this period may disrupt this process.
